The Humanities Department of Midlands Technical College
is delighted you are interested in learning music
appreciation online. We cover the elements of music as
well has the European Classical Music and American music
traditions.
Please read the following carefully since it contains
(1) procedures you must follow once you've enrolled in
the course; (2) directions for accessing MTC's WebCT
tutorial; and (3) the course syllabus (books,
objectives, grading, software requirements).
Accessing
the Course
As
soon as you have enrolled and paid your tuition and
fees, call the professor at 803-432-0460 between 6pm and
9pm before proceeding. Fill out the online form here,
There is no mandatory on-campus orientation although you
will be doing orientation exercises on the site during
the first week of the course. Using the information you
give in your email, the instructor will send you
directions for logging on to the course web site. You
will received this information on or before the first
day of classes for the semester. Your instructor is Dr.

Before You Log in...
This course is taught using WebCT, a course delivery
system that includes chat rooms, discussion boards,
testing, and even its own mail system. Although the
system is very user friendly, you should review our
online WebCT Tutorial before you attempt to log on
to the course web site. If you are new to WebCT, also
consider attending one of the hands-on WebCT Workshops
offered by the college. Check the Distance Learning link
on the college web sits for details.
Tests and
Orientation
All tests
are online and there is not an orientation for this
class.

COURSE
DESCRIPTION |
Music Appreciation is an
introduction to the study of music with focus on the
elements of music and their relationships, the musical
characteristics of representative works and composers,
common musical forms and genres of various western and
non-western historical style periods and appropriate
listening. This is a college transfer course. |

OBJECTIVES |
MUSIC 105 addresses
the humanities component of the general education core,
which states: "Graduates should understand the diversity
of our cultural heritage and the effects of artistic or
philosophical influences."
If the student uses this course to satisfy the
humanities core value, the student should be able to
1. Demonstrate how music uniquely expresses human
thought, values, and emotions.
2. Compare and contrast musical styles from different
historical periods and cultures.
3. Evaluate musical works in relation to the societies
in which they were created.
Upon successful completion of this particular course,
the student should also be able to
1. Demonstrate ability to listen appreciatively and
intelligently to the rich heritage of both western and
non-western music.
2. Identify and explain the basic elements from which
music is created.
3. Explain how important composers fashioned the basic
elements of music into their compositions.
4. Relate important pieces of music or styles of
composition to parallel developments in literature,
philosophy, and the other fine arts.
5. Identify the major historical periods and styles of
musical writing.
6. Demonstrate effective analytical and communication
skills |

COURSE
REQUIREMENTS |
Mid-term and Final--1/3
of Course Grade
The Midterm will consist of a listening section matching
and essay. The Final will consist of all information
from the Midterm Exam to the last day of class. All
students will be required to take the Midterm and Final.
ll. Quizzes and Discussions--1/3
of Course Grade
(1/2 Quizzes, 1/2 Discussions) Quizzes are emailed to
the instructor. Quizzes are provided by www.norton.com/enjoy
(Password is music appreciation). Each student is
required to respond once to each discussion topic
created by the instructor. I will post the discussion
questions to the discussion area.
lll Concert Requirements--1/3
of Course Grade
Students are required to attend three concerts
during the semester and submit program, ticket and typed
critique (approximately on to two pages in length).
Get approval before attending any concerts!
Email Me! Two
concerts need to be completed by midterm and the final
concert two weeks before the end of the
semester. If you are unable to attend concerts, I have
an alternative to this requirement. You need to watch
four videos and write critiques. For example, Amadeus
is an acceptable video. Get approval before assuming
a video is acceptable. |
